How to Become an Insurance Agent in Texas (2026 Guide)
Step-by-step guide to becoming a licensed insurance agent in Texas: license types, exam, fingerprinting, TDI application, and first job.
Why become an insurance agent in Texas?
Texas is one of the largest insurance markets in the United States. Demand for licensed agents in San Antonio, Austin, Houston, Dallas, and Fort Worth remains strong, and the path from zero experience to a licensed, producing agent typically takes 30–60 days.
Step 1: Pick your license type
The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) issues several lines of authority. Most new agents start with one of these:
- General Lines – Property & Casualty (P&C): auto, home, renters, commercial.
- General Lines – Life, Accident & Health (L&H): life, annuities, health, supplemental.
- Personal Lines: a narrower P&C license limited to personal (non-commercial) products.
At Go Maggie, our personal lines roles use the General Lines P&C or Personal Lines license.
Step 2: Complete pre-license education
Texas does not require a fixed number of pre-license hours, but virtually every successful candidate takes a state-approved course (typically 30–40 hours per line) from providers like Kaplan, ExamFX, or A.D. Banker. Plan on 1–3 weeks of study.
Step 3: Pass the state exam
Exams are administered by Pearson VUE at testing centers across Texas, including multiple locations in San Antonio. The exam fee is currently $43. Most lines have a 150-question exam with a two-and-a-half-hour time limit and a 70% passing score.
Step 4: Get fingerprinted
Schedule a fingerprinting appointment with IdentoGO (the TDI-approved vendor). Results are sent directly to the Texas Department of Insurance for your background check.
Step 5: Submit your TDI application
Apply electronically through Sircon or NIPR. The current state license fee is $50. Most applications are approved within a few business days once the background check clears.
Step 6: Get appointed and start producing
A license alone does not let you sell — you need carrier appointments. That is where joining an established agency makes the biggest difference. Go Maggie appoints you with our carrier panel, supplies warm inbound leads (no cold calling), and pairs you with a mentor for your first 90 days.
